           BIRTH OF THE COOL:
HOW JAZZ GREAT MILES DAVIS FOUND HIS SOUND

Written by Kathleen Cornell Berman

Illustrations by Keith Henry Brown

Birth of the Cool: How Jazz Great Miles Davis Found His Sound is a lyrical, rhythmic story told in free verse. The biography explores the childhood and early career of this jazz icon as he develops his unique sound on the trumpet. It follows Miles’ musical journey from East St. Louis to rural Arkansas to NYC where he studies music at Julliard, but his real learning took place on 52cd St, where “jazz clubs cram together, jazz legends jam, and history is made.” Times were not always easy; it took years for him to develop his beautiful sound. Miles’ perseverance to constantly listen, learn and change will inspire kids to                                                    find their own voice.
